Sanitary butterfly valves are widely used in industries such as food, pharmaceutical, medical and bioengineering, and their material selection is crucial to ensure product safety, sanitation and reliability.

Material selection for sanitary butterfly valves is based on several key factors, including biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, high and low temperature performance, smoothness and ease of cleaning, strength and wear resistance, etc.


1. Biocompatibility: 

Sanitary butterfly valves are widely used in food, pharmaceutical and medical industries, in contact with the human body or for processing products related to the human body. Therefore, materials must have good biocompatibility and not have adverse effects on product quality and human health. Common materials with good biocompatibility include stainless steel (such as 316L stainless steel) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).

2. Corrosion resistance: 

Sanitary butterfly valves are often exposed to various corrosive media, such as food acids, alkalis, solutions, etc. Therefore, the selected material must have excellent corrosion resistance to ensure that the valve can operate stably for a long time. Stainless steel alloys, especially 316L stainless steel, are common corrosion-resistant materials, and special alloy materials such as Hastelloy can also be selected.

3. High temperature and low temperature performance: 

In some applications, sanitary butterfly valves need to work in high or low temperature environments. Therefore, the material must have good high and low temperature performance to ensure the stability and reliability of the valve under different temperature conditions. High temperature applications typically use high temperature alloy materials such as stainless steel alloys and nickel alloys. Cryogenic applications, on the other hand, may require special low-temperature polymers or reinforcement materials.

4. Smoothness and ease of cleaning: 

The surface inside the sanitary butterfly valve must be smooth to prevent the growth of bacteria and easy to clean to ensure hygiene requirements. Materials such as 316L stainless steel generally have better surface smoothness and ease of cleaning, while polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) has excellent non-stick properties for easy cleaning.


In the process of material selection for sanitary butterfly valves, other factors should also be considered comprehensively, such as cost, availability and adaptability. In addition, relevant regulatory standards and industry norms need to be followed to ensure that the selected materials meet the requirements of hygienic applications.

Common material choices include stainless steel (such as 316L stainless steel), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), high-temperature resistant alloys, and rigid polyurethane. Depending on the specific application requirements, other specialty materials can also be considered. Considering the above factors comprehensively and following the relevant regulations and standards, suitable materials can be selected to ensure the safety, sanitation and reliability of the sanitary butterfly valve.
